DMAC nostalgia from Warren Butler



A friend of Warren Butler's came up with this bit of history from an old DMAC soaring article...."Look at the names...Sheldon, Dorse, Mike Ward, Les Wilks, etc, etc", writes Warren.
This is of personal interest to me as my first contest visit to DMAC was to view the '73 Natal thermal soaring champs, won by Chris Goble, a friend of my Dad. I got to see Ernie Morrison's creation in action at the time, along with a certain Bob Howse (now Rob), who managed to max a Phase 4 slope soaring at 9:00am in the morning. Mike Sparks was another leading contender in those days. Unfortunately, by the time I got contest active in '76, most of these folk had moved on to other branches of the hobby and Noel Drew was busy rebuilding the soaring side again.
A previous visit to the Valley club and Mike Ward had also sparked the aero modelling interest and it was many years later that I had the pleasure of serving on the committee with Les Wilks.
Sheldon is another lifer who joined Russell at the recent Volksrust scale event for a most enjoyable outing. John Dorse is still the most active of us all.......!

Key Ridge slope


It took me seven weeks to get back to Key Ridge, but here are some pics as promised..

With not a SW wind in sight and having threatened to visit Key Ridge in a NE for a while now, we finally got there this weekend. Easy drive up the N3, a short stretch of good dirt road, and a steepish section of, in places, rocky dirt track brought us out on top of the hill next to the trig. beacon. Great views all round, especially of the N3 going up and over Key Ridge.
Found Alan Sneedon and 2 mates already there on Saturday, mainly flying chevron wings, while Arthur flew his Palooka (local design) and Fling, Mike a Brainstorm and I flew an old QB 1200.Lift was variable and light but we flew with no mishaps.
Sunday, with a slightly steadier NE, we headed up there a bit earlier, and again found Alan and Co, plus Conrad and Dave Hooker, Bradley and a whole bunch of other guys whose names I didn't get, including a paraglider. Everything from a F3B ship to a Weasel was flung out over the N3, and a good afternoon was had by all. Very impressive was a Windrider Fox made from EPP, which really carved up the sky.Plenty of chevron wings in attendance and even some combat attempted which added to the fun. Easy retrievals down the front side, and a big flat open space behind for more controlled landings. If this is the average winter flying conditions on this slope, then roll on summer!Definately worth another visit soon, and lots more in summer....
Had a few full sized aircraft fly over while on finals for the private landing strip in Alverstone.

Aerobatics for the upcoming Summer - why, how and when.

My two favourite reads at the moments are the Berg Blog and Kev Farr’s slope column in the excellent Southeaster mag. Mainly cause the accent is on fun and also because slope soaring has a habit of reinventing itself over the years. Remember that word “fun”…….

Kev may not be surprised that his mention of the difficulties of applying the existing formal slope aerobatic schedules to the common all garden slope soarers is something the DMAC have wrestled with for three decades, including the time consuming climbing for height between maneuvers and the short contest operating time envelopes between 2:00 and 5:00pm in the afternoon.

WHY

The introduction hints at why slope aerobatics has never established itself for more than short spurts. Unfortunately, do’ers like me had neither the inclination nor Kev’s much mentioned nuts to go tamper with the slope commandments. Maybe the TOSS lads are just the fresh faced mob to rewrite to something mooch more “fun” for the slope lads, bearing in mind that “serious” is really not that easily attainable in this very different branch of the aero modeling discipline.

HOW

The answer lies in the Capie’s most favourite sexy slope rhythm, the all too common half-pipe. The solution being, stick in some varied simple tricks in through the bottom of the swoop and a continuous slope aerobatic sequence thus achieved for shorts periods of time.

The upside is that the entire sequence can be achieved within a minute and, more importantly, pretty much the whole mob from the particular class can soar and play at height, awaiting their turn and alleviating boredom. All the introduction negatives addressed in one foul swoop (to coin a phrase ;-), including involving the modern popular flying wing foamies as another class.

Some practice by Brad Conlon on the popular Toko, along with myself on a V Tail non rudder Chapter 2 plus a tatty 36 inch foamie, proved the sequence is easily attainable with a bit of practice by pretty much the cross section of popular slope craft (but also very easy to look stunning or funny bad….. ;-).

The three tricks are scored out of ten and the all too often iffy stall turns / wingovers incorporated only as part of the overall presentation, thus very little impact on the scoring. It is hard to describe without lots of hand signals and the written explanation is damn confusing to the un-initiated so thankfully, John Lightfoot’s ribbon drawing skills have come to the rescue - just click on the drawing for full size.

WHEN

Get the (slope ;-) Tossers out to give the starter pattern above a go on an informal level. It is deceptively tricky, great fun but practical for any slope soarer than can fly inverted (we even allowed those inverted challenged pilots to swop out for another trick with a 1 point sacrifice).

Then slowly expand the envelope to encompass degrees of difficulty, without getting carried away, and get some brave soul to write us a new practical pattern sequence and we might just see a return to slope aerobatic comps, based on fun and lotsa flying….. ;-)
EXPLANATION OF RIBBON SEQUENCE
Half pipes are a continual series of huge U shaped swoops left to right and back, the U facing the judges and audience, topped each end with a stall turn toward the wind – often used to build speed, energy and height.

One may build up initial height and a series of half pipes before the judging starts, which is called when at the dip bottom and climbing for the first stall. The sequence is then flown continuously as follows but may be in a changed order and one of the maneuvers (Roll, loop, or inverted) changed to a nominated replacement for a 1 point sacrifice.
1. Warm up with some half pipes and then call "enter" as passing through the dip.
2. Stall turn side into wind, as normal for half pipe.
3. Full 360 degree roll (left or right) through the dip.
4. Stall turn side into wind, as normal for half pipe.
5. Full inside loop through the dip.
6. Stall turn side into wind, followed by immediate diving 180 degree roll to inverted.
7. Inverted pass through the dip.
8. Inverted stall turn side into wind, followed by immediate 180 degree roll to normal.
9. Call "exit" as pass through the dip.
The judging will be 10 points each for the roll (either left or right), loop and inverted swoop plus a further 10 points for the presentation of the stall turns, centering and overall sequence.
By way of inspiration, this little reminder from Scotland, the joy of sloping.....

Springfield Chickens out and about part 2 - U control line at Ashley sports field (Pinetown).



Russ Contradt's wow (very) looking new Score ARF, flew magic until a bellcrank pushrod forced an inverted landing, fortunately only a wrinkled cowl and bumped the fin off - nothing serious and looking forward to next time.

An ideal venue for CL, with nice shady spectator seating. A bunch of interested folk were in attendance, including old timer Dave Hooker and that man Nev Tangye from Model world. A very keen lightie and his Mum stayed on and were asking Doug a bunch of questions, nice to see. A new small RC helicopter man around the corner at Ashley centre, along with the Highway Wail reporter were in attendance as well.






For broad banders only, not a great cell movie but man does it show the frantic action with a streamer cut followed by a tail chomp, along with oos and aahs. Dirk and Conrad were really fired and anyone a bit jaded with slope speed should try this for a buzz. Repeat attendance at this magic venue is iffy but the CL lads are going persist with the second Saturday morning of each month, at various venues. [This a MP4 movie and Russ has alerted that it is thus not viewable by all - a quick Google shows some useful places to download off the net].

Kobus repairs the Secco wing

A frantic search for a out of production Graupner Secco yielded a broken wing from Luke and a fuse from another source. Kobus Visage has done a stunning job of repairing and respraying the wing, the cell pic does it no justice - well done, boet! It was also a chance to survey some of the composite beasties he has been developing in his garage.

Sungazer Scale Glider fly in at Volksies



As Russ will attest, Mrs Greer's oldest was "reeelly reeelly" chuffed with the maiden flight of the CMP ASW28 with foam veeneer wings at the Volksrust Sungazer scale glider event. more of a blow by blow report on the Barbie glider will surface in due course.

KZN thermal soaring champs - pics and results

Natal Thermal Soaring Championships – 2008 - report by Dennis Bird

This year the Natal Thermal Soaring Championships were held at Summerveld on 29/30 March. Despite the fact that there were very few entries, the overall standard of flying was very good.

On Saturday morning competitors and officials assembled in the parking lot for a pilots briefing. Because of the heavy cloud cover it was feared that the competition might be interrupted by rain. Once the horses departed we set out the winches and assembled our planes.

Rose Wittstock handled the duties of CD and capturing of flight details. Dave Greer kindly provided the laptop and relevant programs to calculate the results which were then entered onto the computer by Des Cooper and Rose. The power supply for the computer was provided by Fred Wittstock.

Despite the heavy cloud cover many competitors reached the target times for the class in question and 44% of all landings in the open class finished within 2m of the spot. During the second round it started to rain gently and a vote was taken to decide whether to continue flying. The majority decided that we should press on, which proved to be the right decision as the weather improved after about an hour and we did not loose any flying time. We did however blow a fuse in the power supply which prevented Des from capturing all the flight times on the computer.

On Sunday there was less cloud than on day 1 and the wind had shifted towards the north-east. The wind was a little stronger than on day 1 and the lift was more difficult to find and follow. As a result some slots were won by times that fell far short of the target times, and re-launches were fairly common.

A feature of the event was the wonderful spirit of camaraderie amongst the competitors. Hardly a cross word was spoken or voice raised in anger. There was of course the normal healthy banter which helped to make things interesting and relieve the stress. After the final flight of the day the scores were calculated and audited in record time thanks to the efficiency of Dave and his helpers. Thereafter the trophies and prizes were distributed and everyone went their respective ways, tired, but happy.

At this point I would like to thank all of the competitors for their participation and all helpers for their patience and dedication in some rather testing conditions at times. A special thanks also to Eddie (of the beard), who came to watch and ended up retrieving many ‘chutes. Thanks to NWJ for sponsoring prizes for first place. Finally, I must congratulate the winners of the various events. In the end their consistency and skill paid dividends.

Glider low battery alarm - for Ziggy ;-)


Yoinks ago, Robbie Cutler and I knocked up these dinky little low battery voltage alarms for our slope planes, using a little buzzer instead of the LED. I always have to ferret around for the now ancient December '94 issue of the Quiet Flight International Ken Vincent article every time I wish to revisit the project, so the blog becomes a useful reminder place.

The recent availability of ultra bright LED's for day time visibility and a battery scare for Ziggy with his immaculate new Gulp has prompted a revisit to the project. Given that the IC is still available and the two resistors, LED and servo lead are simply soldered to the legs on the back of the tiny IC (about 10 mm long), it is simple, tidy and very compact (thumbnail size) to assemble to the end of a servo lead, which is plugged in to a spare receiver socket and installed in a craft, as against other more busy circuits on the net.

The original article is detailed and offers a bunch of resistor values with various trigger voltages but I have settled on 4.6 volts as useful for four cells. R1 is 30K and R2 is 10K. Think layman drawing for pin orientation.

Can't say you were not given a useful plane saver!

Out and about with the Springfield Chickens


Be careful out there, Russ's Mazda car with Simon's Audi wheel after loosing two tyres to a nasty little rock at Switchblade - odd fit so very carefully driven home. Sean Oellerman preceding this with similar and Dave thought he knew the drill but drilled a new tyre as well......
The short lived but oh so enjoyed sordjourn to the Crusaders club for some Monday night park flying.....

Making a V tail

I have recently finished building a "Banshee", a 60 inch slope speed foamie from Tuffplanes. I bought it because I liked it's no-nonsense look as opposed to the many semi-scale planes they had on offer. (Tuffplanes seem now to have closed as the enire website is out of stock). The plane is now finished and flies very well. It needed masses of lead in the nose to get the C of G right due to both a short nose and a fibleglass strengthened tail, so she is not made for light winds - however when the wind is strong, as it was on Sunday at Switchblade, she goes zipping around the sky, and I look forward to entering her in a speed comp.

My biggest challenge however was the V tail - I was supprised when the kit arrived that all I got was a balsa plank and rough sketch showing me how to assemble the tail. I was very worried I'd mess it up and decided to make a jig. First I did a computer printout of the 110 degrees I needed, then cut out 2 identical cardboard frames that I had to line up exactly - also ensuring the two sheets were parallel and 90 degrees from the tabletop. Once it was set I put the two cut out surfaces into the jig shamfering the bottom of each and doing an initial light epoxy glue. Once set I did a second epoxy, then put 3 layers of fibreglass (in diminishing lengths) on both sides.
The next big challenge was gluing it to the fus. I got the fus perfectly level, then cut the jig in two and put the halves either side of the tail as a former before epoxying the tail on. Again finishing the tail/fus join with 3 layers of glass.
The final challenge was the control surface connections. Again all I got was a brass pipe and a sketch... My only concern was that I wanted top hinged elevators (the kit suggested there was no need for rudder input or "ruddervaters") using book binding tape and not the central hinge on a curved elevator end they where suggesting . The problem came as the copper pipe (which is curved) would run up the joint. But in the end it worked out. Getting the brass bent at the right angle was quite a mission though. I also had to make my own "Y" pushrod for the elevator control horns which I made with 2 threaded bar onto one with epoxy and wrapped in thin metal wire.
There was not a whole lot of room to play with and I used brass connectors not the normal plastic ones. I also struggled to get decent play on the elevators - but due to the long tail the small play is fine as it turned out.
